The Mechanism

Why it works

Neurofeedback works through four established neuroscientific mechanisms — none of which require medication, willpower, or conscious effort.

Operant conditioning

The brain receives immediate feedback when it produces a target pattern. Over repeated sessions, it learns to sustain that pattern — the same mechanism that drives all forms of learning.

Neuroplasticity

Neurofeedback exploits the brain's inherent capacity to change its own structure and function. Repeated activation of target pathways strengthens them — 'neurons that fire together, wire together.'

Homeostatic regulation

By repeatedly guiding the brain toward more balanced states, neurofeedback supports the brain's natural self-regulation mechanisms — reducing the 'stuck' patterns that underlie chronic symptoms.

The Basics

Understanding brainwaves

Your brain produces electrical signals at different frequencies. Each frequency corresponds to a different mental state — and imbalances in these frequencies drive most of the symptoms we treat.

Delta (0.5–4 Hz)

Deep sleep & healing

The slowest brainwaves, dominant during deep, dreamless sleep and the body's restorative phase. Deficient delta is linked to insomnia and feeling unrefreshed after sleep.

Theta (4–8 Hz)

Dreaming, creativity & deep relaxation

Present in light sleep, daydreaming, and creative insight states. Excess theta when awake is strongly linked to ADHD, inattentiveness, and brain fog.

Alpha (8–12 Hz)

Calm, present awareness

The brain's 'idle' rhythm — calm but alert, similar to a focused meditation state. Low alpha is linked to anxiety and an inability to switch off.

Beta (12–30 Hz)

Active thinking & focus

The dominant state for cognitive tasks, problem-solving, and focused attention. Too much high-beta drives anxiety, rumination, and racing thoughts.

Gamma (30+ Hz)

Peak processing & insight

The fastest brainwaves, associated with high-level information processing, binding of sensory experiences, and moments of insight. Linked to peak cognitive performance.
